There is something truly special about the Yorkshire coast and the surrounding Wolds in May. The spring foals are finding their feet in our stable yard, the clifftops are turning green and the summer crowds haven’t quite arrived yet.
Whether you are travelling with three generations of family or your favourite four-legged friend, our farm cottage is the perfect central base. We aren’t just 5 miles from the sea, we are also on the doorstep of some of Yorkshire’s finest market towns and stately homes. To help you plan your May escape, we’ve rounded up some of the area’s must visit events – from the heights of the Bridlington cliffs to the heart of the Driffield countryside.
1. The Sky Full of Colour: Bridlington Kite Festival
When: May 16th – 17th 2026
Where: Sewerby Cliff Tops
This is the ultimate family day out. Some of the world’s largest inflatable kites take to the skies over Bridlington Bay. From giant bears to slithering snakes, it’s a spectacular sight for both kids and grandparents.
Dog Friendly? Dogs are welcome in the gardens and grounds of Sewerby Hall on a lead, so your pup doesn’t have to miss out on the sea air and maybe a quick snack at The Ship.
2. Wildlife Wonders: Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition
When: Throughout May
Where: Sewerby Hall and Gardens
If you have a nature love in the family, this world-renowned exhibition from the Natural History Museum is a must-see. Hosted in the beautiful setting of Sewerby Hall, it’s a great way to see the world’s best nature photography before exploring the 50 acres of gardens.
Dog Friendly? Dogs are welcome in the gardens and grounds on a lead, so you can take turns popping into the exhibition.
3. All Aboard: The Yorkshire Belle
When: Daily Sailings throughout May
Where: Bridlington Harbour
May is the prime time to see the “Seabird City” at Bempton Cliffs from the water. Hop on the historic Belle for a cruise. You’ll get in incredible view of the puffins and gannets nesting on the chalk cliffs.

4. For the Music Lovers: The Ultimate MOD Revue
When: 23rd May 2026
Where: Bridlington Spa
For a bit of evening culture, the legendary Bridlington Spa is hosting “The Ultimate MOD Revue”. It’s a high-energy show featuring hits from The Who, The Jam and The Kinks. Perfect for a night out while the dogs snoozes back at the cottage.
5. Hot Air Balloons and Big Tunes: SkyGlow Music Festival
When: 9th May 2026
Where: Driffield Showground
If you’re looking for a “wow” moment this May, the SkyGlow Festival at Driffield Showground (just 15 minutes away) is spectacular. Think massive hot air balloon launches by day and a “Night Glow” spectacle the tethered balloon light up as the sun goes down. It’s designed specifically for families, with tribute acts and a giant funfair to keep all generations entertained.
Good to know: This is a high energy event! It’s a great one for the humans to enjoy while dogs have a quiet afternoon.
Bonus: The Sledmere Spring Fair
When: Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th May 2026
Where: Sledmere House
Perfect for the early May Bank Holiday, Sledmere House hosts a gorgeous Craft, Gift and Vintage Spring Fair. It’s the quintessential Yorkshire day out – you can browse artisan stalls, explore the new adventure playground with the children, and visit their famous rare-breed farm
Dog Friendly? Yes! Dogs on leads are very welcome in the beautiful Parkland and Gardens at Sledmere. So they can enjoy the 18th century “Capability” landscape right alongside you
Relax at the farm
After a day of watching hot air balloons, browsing the artisan stalls at Sledmere, or cruising the coast on the Yorkshire Belle, there’s nothing better than coming back to the quiet of the farm.
